1 MINUTE CATCH UP
PRODIGAL SON was part of the UK Gospel scene's regional pioneers of Hip-hop (he's from Nottingham), and is never one to shy away from potentially hard-hitting and thorny issues (his track THINGS PEOPLE DO FOR MONEY was an excellent exercise in oblique storytelling that intelligently tackled drug and gun crime)

As he gears up for his debut album scheduled for the first quarter of 2007, he's on the case of the ladies with a new promo single 'WHAT WOMEN WANT?', specifically aimed at those lovely sisters in search of the pre-packaged perfect man (some argue that's all of them, but hey, I couldn't possibly comment.)

...considering how sensitive a collective nerve this one's likely to touch, going with a 'One Minute With...' story probably wasn't my best idea ever...

YOU'RE BACK, MR PRODIGAL (BUT THEN AGAIN, THAT IS YOUR NAME)...

AND YOU'VE BEEN AWAY FOR WHAT REASON EXACTLY...?

OK, SO NOW THERE'S NEW FOOD OUT OF THE PRODIGAL'S KITCHEN...
Yes-in-deedy!

As well as taking time out to spend with my Father, (The Lord) and my family, I've also been spending a lot of time in the studio working on my forthcoming album 'TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN....'

Absolutely! I've had the privilege of working with a zenith of producers including ROCKHILL, OASIS AWARD winners SPIRITLED, and 5AM to mention a few. The beats are heavy, the rhymes are tight and as always the themes are relevant.

Speaking of which, we've just released a promo track titled 'WHAT WOMEN WANT?' which basically addresses the issue of women who are in search of that perfect, affluent, Spirit-filled Christian man.
YOU HAD TO GET IN THERE BEFORE I HAD A CHANCE TO MENTION IT. I'LL COME BACK TO THAT IN A MINUTE...

TWO THINGS I WANT TO BRIEFLY CHAT ABOUT (I KNOW I ONLY HAVE A MINUTE) 1: YOU ALWAYS SEEM TO USE THESE MAINSTREAM BEATS FOR YOUR 'SOCIAL ISSUE' THINGS... WHY?
Simply because it's a way of giving something back
to the fans of PRODIGAL SON (a bit like a free mix
tape).

And also in terms of the above mentioned promo, my
lyrics just seemed to marry beautifully with the
instrumental.
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. THE ORIGINAL
OBIE TRICE THING WAS WEIRD, BUT I HAVE TO
ADMIT THIS WORKS VERY WELL. I SEE FITZ IS ALREADY SHOWING IT SOME LOVE
ON BBC 1XTRA.

HOWEVER, THIS IS MY SITE, AND I ASK THE QUESTIONS. DON'T BE RUDE. I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN I'M READY TO TALK ABOUT 'WHAT WOMEN WANT?'. I'M BUILDING UP TO IT. TRUST ME; IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD...

SO: QUESTION 2: THERE ARE THE SLIGHTLY OFF-CENTRE ISSUES YOU TACKLE...

STOP THERE. I SAID WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT 'WHAT WOMEN WANT?' UNTIL I'M READY. WHAT PART OF THAT DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND...?
Yeah, BRING IT BACK [done over FAT JOE's 'Lean Back' track] was kind of like a dig at the mainstream, with the way in which they (negatively) glorify superstardom.

However, 'WHAT WOMEN WANT?'...

Sorry..

Yeah. It's geared towards the ladies that think Mr. Right has to look like DENZEL, PHARRELL or even WILL FARRELL (if you like that kinda thing).
APOLOGY ACCEPTED. OK, GO AHEAD, THEN. IT'S ALL ABOUT WHAT 'WOMEN WANT?'...

Hahaha... YOU'RE FUNNY. YOU REALISE YOU'RE SKATING ON THIN ICE HERE. THE SISTERS MIGHT COME AFTER YOU. SERIOUSLY, THOUGH: IT'S ABOUT BEING 'CONTROVERSIAL BUT HUMOUROUS', EH...?

OK. THIS IS ONE THAT MIGHT RUN AND RUN, ESPECIALLY IF YOU GET TAKEN UP ON THE OFFER BY FEMALE EMCEES...
Yes. I've also laid down the gauntlet on this one. Female emcees that feel that the track is dissing can download the instrumental free from my MySpace and spit their version of the track.

Yes. Unless they all agree with me of course!

Well, the album will be released (God willing) during the first quarter of next year. However, to close 2006 we're working on a music video for RMUSIC and CHANNEL U.
WELL, WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE, THEN... I'M NOT GONNA GET INVOLVED. OOOPS... THERE'S THE CLOCK. ONE MINUTE.

BEFORE YOU GO: GIVE ME SOME IDEA OF WHAT'S GOING ON FOR THE REST OF '06, AND THEN WHAT WE'VE GOT TO COME IN '07...

COOL. WE'RE DEFINITELY GOING TO PICK THIS UP IN 2007....
And then for early 2007 there'll be another single release from my forthcoming album.

We'll also be giving away exclusive previously unreleased tracks and remixes to fans that subscribe to the PRODIGAL SON's mailing list via the website

Cool.

Sorry.
...NEXT TIME YOU MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTIONS...

SO YOU SHOULD BE.
Just in case you're wondering: the instrumental OBIE TRICE track in question is 'GOT SOME TEETH'.

It's offbeat quirkiness is perfectly suited to PRODIGAL SON's tongue-in-cheek treatment of an issue that - for all our jocular banter in this interview - is one that does raise temperatures in heated discussions and even arguments between the sexes in Christian life.

As ever, his observations are sharp, and delivery is up to his usual high standard. One most definitely worth checking out. All the relevant links can be found below...
