SPECIAL FEATURE
PART TWO: SPOKEN WORD
move well out of your comfort zone...
What's the point otherwise...?
I think this feature does that. From Sugarblack's pushing uncomfortable
buttons to Alan's point about Spoken Word artists' place in the pecking
order, via [verb]swish's observation about perception(s)...
...to new artist Sharon's optimistic observation about the journey of the
genre to the gospel mainstream. Questions need to be asked, not least of
which is:
Can Spoken Word be the next sound of UK gospel music...?
If it can (or can't), why is that?

And - even more crucially - where does this all sit within the dictates of the
great commission of Christ?
If Christian artists cannot examine the fullness of life and living from their own experiences, perspective and choice of genre (Spoken Word here and the
evolving Hip-hop/Grime/Electro trend in part 1), then where are the essential
lone voice prophets in the wilderness going to come from?
I haven't got any answers, though. Just more questions...
Nice one, George

JUDE SIMPSON: Civil servant by day (she was once David Blunkett's
PA), Middle England Hip-hop stand-up poet by night. Jude has shared
the stage with the likes of Phenzwaan and performed on the BBC's
poetry slam and 'stand-up poetry' events.
More recently, she received kudos for 'Just Walk With Me', her book
about a Christian youth project in Bradford. [verb]swish is a fan.

Having seen her performances at many a Greenbelt, I am one too.

POESY: its Facebook profile says it is '...a bi-monthly showcase event
with all things floetic (Poetry/Open Mic/Spoken Word - Gospel Poetry)
augmented with live jazz/soulful music...'
The aim is to use poetry as an artform to reach out to the community
(Mark 16:15).
