There's obviously something in the water in West London.
First Ealing-based 29TH CHAPTER dropped what has turned out to be a highlight album of the year for me, and now the 12-hand, mixed-race, multi-genre bunch of musical friends have got together to produce a well-packaged collection of songs, spanning many of the genres that the contemporary church isn't hesitant to experiment with these days.
They're from Ealing as well.
This is the DUNAMIS COLLECTIVE. Questions by YINKA AWOJOBI and answers by the group's ADEY and DIANA. There's also a very interesting piece on them on the UNITED BY ONE website. All links at the end of the feature

HOW DID THE GROUP START?
WHAT HAS HAVING QUITE A DIVERSE RACIAL
BACKGROUNDS BEEN LIKE FOR THE DYNAMIC OF THE GROUP?

BACKGROUNDS BEEN LIKE FOR THE DYNAMIC OF THE GROUP?
DIANA: We're all from the same small church in West Ealing
and some of us have known each other for more than 10
years.
Over the years we've seen the group grow from only a few
dedicated members to the full band of professional musicians
that we have now.
DIANA: It's great!! We're all very good friends and really respect and
encourage each other. We've been able to learn a lot from each other
both musically and spiritually - and I so love African curry!!
ADEY: It's a very beautiful thing when people from all over the world
and some of us have known each other for more than 10

can come together and worship one God. God created diversity and in our church we celebrate that...
Having people from diverse racial backgrounds teaches you so much about worship and how different people express their love to God. Trust me - It's never boring.
DIANA: Surprisingly easy. So much stuff was going on already with people working together on different projects. It was more or less a case of bringing it all together and encouraging a few more people to get involved.
One of the things I love most about this album is the way that everybody has worked together to produce some excellent tracks.
ADEY: I think it was fairly easy because right from the start we knew

THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM 'SIMPLE LOVE' ALSO HAS DIVERSE STYLES AS WELL. WHAT WAS IT LIKE PUTTING IT TOGETHER...?
EACH ONE OF YOU IS AN ACCOMPLISHED ARTIST IN THEIR OWN
RIGHT. WHY WAS THERE A NEED TO COME TOGETHER...?

exactly where we were going with album. I think the sheer mix of music
styles is also one of the many strengths of the album.
DIANA: A lot of us are established artists already but not through or for
church. We have always been amazed by the amount of talent gathered in such a small church and firmly believe that God has a plan for us as a group.
Making this album is the first step in trying to do what we believe God has called us to do.
DIANA: Some of us have been part of the UK Gospel scene for a while and I personally have seen an incredible amount of talent on the gospel circuit. There's some heavy music around!!

AS NEWCOMERS TO THE UK GOSPEL MUSIC SCENE, WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF IT...?
WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT WHERE WE ARE AS AN INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW?
WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT WHERE WE ARE AS AN INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW?
ADEY: The UK Gospel scene is strong and is getting even stronger... WATCH OUT !!!!!
DIANA: There's a lot of good stuff going on at the moment. I like the fact that music is a lot easier to produce and that a lot of people write and record music from their bedrooms. A lot of schools encourage and teach young people to write music, and with the revolutionary myspace.com they can get heard.
ADEY: The quality of talent flying the flag right now - is one good thing. Also the range: everyone has got something different to offer.
Another good thing is media exposure for todays artist's. TV channels like R MUSIC, websites like UK Gospel.com and UNITEDBYONE.CO.UK give gospel artist a platform to show their God given talent.

WHAT COULD BE BETTER...?
UK ARTISTS YOU GUYS LIKE AT THE MOMENT?
SO, YOUR ALBUM LAUNCH IS THIS SUNDAY, 26TH NOVEMBER 2006. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT...?

DIANA: The world needs to know! It's about finding ways for the general public to get to know about the UK gospel artists. Record companies are known for always playing it safe and not taking on anything not already tried and tested.
ADEY: The talent is out there and we just need to find an avenue to expose to the masses and
not just the church. We need to pay more attention to the marketing of our materials.
DIANA: RAYMOND & CO. LEMAR, JOSS STONE, LILY ALLEN.
ADEY: NOEL ROBINSON, SOL (WATCH THIS SPACE), TRYUMF, FOUR KONERZ, LEMAR... the list goes on

DIANA: A night of wicked music with top quality musicians. Lots of energy and interaction on stage. It's going to be brilliant!!
ADEY: Lots of fun! Good tunes.... Top quality music ...and lots of ENERGY.. There will be something for everyone - young/old, Christian/non-Christian.
It will be AMAZING!!!!!

The COLLECTIVE's album is a very interesting mix of very musically-driven pieces, and that comes as no surprise as many of the group come from a very professional music background, playing and supporting a whole range of familiar names in the music mainstream.
All things being equal their debut album will shortly be available to preview on UKG Presents.com, and UKG Shop.com to purchase. In the meantime you can check out
UB1 for more on the group, and their MySpace page for more on the music...
