BEHIND THE BEAT
TWO-NINE is another one of my favourite groups.
Last year they released what turned out to be a great
album (easily their best so far) on their new label, OTR
RECORDS.
'UNDERDOGZ' ended up being a family favourite (that's
really saying something, as my wife is a big fan of Praise
& Worship music, not Hip-hop).
This edition of BEHIND THE BEAT looks at the story
behind one of the serious grower albums of 2006, as

project...

TRACK: UNDERDOGZ
This is obviously the title track, and we wanted it to be an anthem
for everyone who felt like an underdog.
Underdogz is a concept we'd been talking about for a while.
It opens the album with a bang and captures the essence of the
concept.

TRACK: FOR THE ONE (Featuring SAMMY G)
TRACK: LOSE CONTROL
TRACK: LOSE CONTROL
This track is just simply addressing the characters that we see on the street, but we're not taking it too seriously. Everyone was feeling this beat when PHONETIX brought it, but the concept took a while to come.
NAVIGATOR came up with the chorus for this one and straight away we began to hear SAMMY spitting on the beat. He loved the track and was totally up for it.
The track was produced by OBI MHONDERA from STARRWORZ ENTERTAINMENT. We got the beat and we were feeling it, but it was definitely different from what we were used to.
We spent an afternoon vibing in the studio and finally MR PRINCE came with the hook. We wanted it to be a track people could just vibe to and enjoy.

WHO AM I? (PART 1)
IS IT A CRIME?
IS IT A CRIME?
This track was quite unique. PHONETIX brought
the beat with the chorus already on there and we
all loved it.
It definitely brings out our conceptual, quirky take on Hip-hop. The track is a different way of presenting our ideal worlds.
It is what it is! A call to every 29 soldier out there to get live! It also specifies what it takes to roll with real people of God.
A serious message wrapped up in a comedy package!
It's kind of a stand against that whole gangster mentality which propagates violence and sexual promiscuity as a good thing, when it is actually nothing but a sign of weakness.

This was originally a whole track but for various reasons we decided to break it in to bite-sized interludes and spread it across the album.
It just tries to capture a bit of the awesomeness of who God is and how minor we are in comparison. This verse is an attempt at God's perspective...
This track is just a response to every narrow
minded religious person who has judged people
by the way they look and not by their character.
It's just saying; "Hey, just because you don't
understand something; don't assume it is of the
devil..."

SHORT STORIES
TAKE ME HIGHER
Just an anthemic song calling on God to give us the strength to get through what this life throws
our way.
It's really a broad look at where society is at, and our response being; 'Lord, take us higher!'
Help us rise above the mess of this world and live in your Glory!
Our take on what money means to us and how it should be used. Again it's a light-hearted track with a strong message.
This accapella verse came from another track and just seemed to fit well as an intro to RECKLESS LOVE
This is really a worship song straight up. The way we live should be as worship to God, and it was inspired by King David in the Bible, who knew what it was to worship God. In a nutshell this
our way.

This track is just addressing the ladies. We felt that we could have addressed the men as well but that can sometimes become a bit clichéd.
We did still rep for the ladies on the chorus though. Often in Hip-hop so much emphasis is put on ladies being told to dance sexually and provocatively, so we wanted to do the opposite.
Ironically, when you hear the beat, the first thing most people want to do is shake it. When we approached JAHAZIEL, he was on it immediately and he really added the finishing touch.
Everybody loves a story. The stories here were not true stories (except for McGladius' verse). We just wanted to reflect the harsh reality of some of the things people experience and show up the emptiness of this life without a relationship with the Lord Jesus.

song is saying; 'Lord whatever it costs me I don't care... I will worship you'.
Again another verse from the original WHO AM I? track, from a man's perspective, recognising how awesome God is...
Another worship song. The heart behind this was to try and build bridges between what people call worship music and Hip-hop.
TIM HUGHES had the same heart, so it was natural that we would get together to set an example. Worship's not just guitars and overdrive pedals. It's offering what we have to God; whether that's Rock, Hip-hop or whatever...

OK, here's the deal: UNDERDOGZ is an absolutely superb album.
After you've probably gone mad over the initial, immediate hits
in DON'T SHAKE IT, LOSE CONTROL and FOR THE ONE, you
definitely have to return to the album to take in the dark,
contemplative issues intelligently covered in SHORT STORIES and
TAKE ME HIGHER...
Undoubtedly, this album is a grower, but - given the chance - one
that's more than likely going to enrich your life. Recommended!
