So. 2006 has been and gone. It's been fun, but also curious.
For all the great things that happened, the year also presented some unfulfilled promise. I can't quite put my finger on it, but somehow I got the feeling there was more out in the ether than actually got on to gigs, CDs and the airwaves....

Anyway; onwards and upwards. Some of what we did get was quite interesting (SONS OF LIGHT come to mind), and chances are 2007 will be a significant year for the industry. We've certainly spent the last 18-24 months building up to SOMETHING, and if the number of people I know that are gearing up to new releases is anything to go by, it'll be a bumper year for new music from both established and new artists.
However, it's all about the 06, and this feature kicks off the first of a few industry retrospective/preview pieces you'll find on UK Gospel.com between now and March 2007.
As you may know, I set up UKG Presents.com to support UKG Shop.com. One of the
biggest problems an emerging industry faces (with its composite elements including new music, new artists, the triple threat of dominance, influence and ignorance from the mainstream industry, and the hard work of developing a full infrastructure), is sustaining a decent exposure momentum.

Regardless of any fancy words as I can muster, nothing beats you actually hearing a piece of music for yourself to make up your own mind as to how good (or how rubbish) you think it is.
So about a year or so after UKG Shop.com went live, UKG Presents.com came into being. Like all great ideas, the premise was a simple one: present a selection of tracks from an album/EP/single, etc, to showcase what it was about. Nothing particularly stunning about that, everyone does it.
However, I had this idea of merging my love of mixing into the showcase format, and all of a sudden I has a strong (and popular) product on my hands! Not only do you get to hear the clips from the music being profiled, you get to hear them beat-mixed, in high-quality 128kbps stereo, for free! Nice deal!

good feeling: YOU hear the music, YOU make up your own mind.
As an additional bonus, many key UK artists have ended up giving their music to the project as FREE MP3 DOWNLOADS. I have to publicly thank (in no particular order): KARL NOVA, NU LIFE, G.I.F.T.E.D, PRODIGAL SON and FRUITS for their contributions. People have been happily downloading away!
There has also been a fantastic international response. Also: as UKG Presents.com
is currently powered by SoundClick.com, I guess many of you use the 'All Songs In One Go' option to create your own little 100% UK gospel music radio show! And you KNOW there ain't that many of those about!
Finally: the main reason for this piece. One of the great things about SoundClick is that it also provides a decent stats option, even with its basic free package (this is well worth investigating if you're an artist, even if you already have a presence on the ubiquitous MySpace). SoundClick's stats (and general backend options) are

waaaaay superior. Fact.
Anyway, as anyone who has been following my writing here on UK Gospel.com and elsewhere knows, I've a love for what it is arguably the backbone of any successful ministry (aside from essential, continual prayer): the measure and assessment of basic statistics.
Statistics are pure. They go beyond the hype and to a large extent represent a more dependable picture. They allow you to plan profitably by targeting areas that need support and development, and enhancing areas that are doing well.
On a more personal level it does two major things for me: allowing me to know what it is you lot are feeling out there in the wider world, which in turn helps me feed the information back to the world (the UKG MP20, 20 most-played tracks chart is compiled this way, for example).

It is also particularly rewarding to see the artists that have their product on any of the UKG platforms (UK Gospel.com, UKG Shop and UKG Presents at the moment, though the number is due to expand pretty soon) get all excited and encouraged when they get to know how strong the response is to projects they may have on any
of the platforms.
The recently-revamped GOSPEL LINK magazine published the MP20 Top 5 in November 2006, and at the GOSPEL GRAND SUMMIT in Birmingham I caught up with SONS OF LIGHT, IDMC founder JOHN FISHER and RnB/Hip-hop artist VIZION. Seeing the gratitude in their eyes while looking at the figures you generated is especially rewarding.
So: we come full circle. Following is the definitive list of the top 20 plays on UKG Presents.com for 2006, as powered by you, and measured by SoundClick.com.
Enjoy. Here's to great music, fantastic ministry, and the taking of the gospel OUT
of the platforms.

Enjoy. Here's to great music, fantastic ministry, and the taking of the gospel OUT
OF THE CHURCH ENTERTAINMENT CIRCUIT. There's nothing wrong with that in itself (we all need some edifying diversion from time to time), but if we're all going to be honest, I think it will be fair to say we've sat on the message of Christ's truth for far too long...
